Hilary Nylander’s work spans sculptural painting, drawing, photo collage and social practice. Obsessed with language and the visual forms it inspires, she explores the friction between digital dependency and the human desire for embodied connection. Currently based in Marshall, NC, Nylander was raised in rural New Jersey near New York City.
Nylander earned her BA in Studio Art with honors from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC in 1993. She has exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, including ArtFields (Lake City, SC), Trolley Barn Gallery (Poughkeepsie, NY), Shockboxx Gallery (Hermosa Beach, CA), Madison County Arts Council (Marshall, NC), and 123 West Main Gallery (Johnson City, TN). Recent online exhibitions include Pattern and Repetition (Conversations with Artists) and Carving Connections (The Alternative Art School). Her work has been published in New Visionary Magazine (Visionary Art Collective).
Nylander’s studio practice draws from her background as a photo stylist, visual merchandiser and creative director in Boston. In 2018 she co-founded a contemporary studio & gallery shop called ha! with artist Amber M. Jensen in Marshall, NC. Nylander returned full-time to her art practice in 2020.
